Mother's Day in Charleston

Because M had an offshore fishing trip scheduled for Thursday/Friday, we decided it would be fun to take a mini family vacation in Charleston and meet him down there!

I got the kids out of school early on Friday and we drove straight to my friend from college, Shelley's, house on Folly Beach and spent several hours catching up with her and watching the kids have a ball playing in the ocean!  M joined us just after we got back up to her house and then we made our way to the hotel.

Saturday was forecasted to be rainy all day.  BOO!!!  We got out kinda early and had breakfast on Market Street at Another Broken Egg.  The rain let up for a while just as we were finishing breakfast so we took advantage of that and perused the market and took an historic carriage ride around town!  We had seen a couple of indoor historic sites on the tour that piqued our interest so we went to investigate some more!  We ended up touring the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon(the kids were pretty enthralled by the dungeon!), ate lunch at Poogan's Porch(YUMMM!!!) and then toured and participated in a scavenger hunt at the Powder Magazine.  C's friend, Nate, had a very in depth and complicated surgery last month and was having complications from it this week and ended up back at MUSC while we were in town.  We stopped by for a quick visit and to bring McDonald's which he was craving.  It was nice to see him smile and to be doing so much better than he was last week!  We left the hospital and still had time to kill before dinner, so despite the fact that it was now pouring rain, we drove out to John's Island and saw the Angel Oak Tree!  It was very impressive - too bad you can't climb it!  We ate dinner and were in bed a lot earlier than we were Friday night after a day full of walking!

Oh the things they can get into!

This was by far the favorite for them - the puzzle booth!

She completed the scavenger hunt at the Powder Magazine!
And was quite proud of herself:)

We were saying that there probably are not many opportunities to get a shot of the tree with no other tourists in it!
I guess that is one advantage of going when it is raining!:)

The lack of sleep is starting to catch up with all of us!!

This morning we got up and packed up early to try and beat the Mother's Day crown to Page's Okra Grill.  They opened at 8am, we arrived at 8:07am and still had a 45 minute wait!?!?  Craziness!!  Luckily, they served delicious mimosas out on the deck so it wasn't quite as bad(I'm sure this was all in their sneaky little plans to get you to spend more money there.. haha!  It worked!).  Breakfast was amazing and we all waddled away very full!  We drove over the bridge one last time into Charleston and walked around Waterfront Park, Rainbow Row and Battery Park before dragging our tired legs and feet into the car for a very trafficky ride back home!

It was a wonderful Mother's Day Weekend and we enjoyed our time as a family - but, there truly is NO place like home!!!
