Yesterday, after C's soccer game, we grabbed a quick lunch, packed up the car, and drove just a short distance to Paris Mountain State Park! It was a beautiful day and I am so thankful for that! This was our first camping trip without friends and I think at first the kids, C especially, was a little bummed about that, but they learned that Mom and Dad aren't too bad to hang out with after all:) It was the most relaxing camping trip we've had, and I'm not sure if that's because we were on our own agenda and not trying to coordinate with others(don't get me wrong, we still love to go with others!!!) or if the kids are getting older and are just easier to take camping. Probably a mix of both!
We got our campsite set up and then went on what we think was about a 2 mile hike! It was suppose to be 3 miles, but the kids both needed to use the bathroom so we had to turn back early! We tried our hand at fishing, which was a major bust because we kept getting our lines caught on trees in the water and then there were just sooo many people out peddle boating that it was just too much activity.
When we got back to the campsite the kids explored around and helped M get the fire started while I prepped dinner - hot dogs for the kids and chicken/veggie packets and potatoes for the adults! All turned out great and we determined that foil packet cooking is the easiest way to cook on a campfire:) After dinner we had the requisite campfire s'mores and sat around the fire for a while but it was getting COLD! So we got into bed early knowing that it takes the kids a very long time to get to sleep when we are all in the tent together!
It got down to about 43*, we were all cold(I am writing this note in hopes that I'll remember to look at this blog post next time I'm wanting to go camping - we need to wait another 4-6 weeks before we go so that we don't freeze!) and apparently state parks are not as strict on enforcing quiet hours because several campsites were up until all hours of the morning! Needless to say, we did not get much sleep! But, other than that, the trip was great and relaxing!
When we got up out of the tent, it was about 7am and we started the fire-making and cooking right away! It did warm up quickly and we were much more comfortable after the sun came up! We had cinnamon rolls cooked in orange peels, eggs, fruit and pancakes for breakfast - all of it delicious!!!
After breakfast, which we piecemeal and leisurely, it was time to start packing up! We stopped at the park's playground on our way out and let the kids play for a bit! We unloaded the car, started laundry and all took very long naps!
When we asked the kids their favorite parts, S said hiking and C said the fire! It was a great family adventure, but our own warm beds are sounding amazing right now!!

We did the Mountain Creek Trail since the kids and I had done the Lake Placid Trail back in the fall! |
|
The boy and his sticks are dangerous! We kept making him go to the back of the line so that he could swing and swat with it to his heart's delight:) |
|
Hot dogs are a necessity for the kids when camping! They won't think of doing anything else:) |
|
This was my dinner and it was amazing!! All we added was pepper and olive oil. I think I'll add some of our homemade bbq sauce next time and see how it goes! |

Getting ready to go to sleep! Look who is nutso! Don't let her fool you though, she was just as crazy! |
|
Brrr!! We tried some cinnamon rolls on skewers, but that didn't work out so well for us! |
|
But once we put them in orange peels and foil, they worked amazingly well! |

Their after-breakfast trailmix snack! |
