Harbor Island Beach 2020

We just spent an absolutely wonderful week at the beach!  We went to Harbor Island, just off of Beaufort and not far from Hunting Island and Fripp!  It was the most relaxing, laid back, secluded beach we've been to and we were so glad to just chill!!

We arrived last Saturday evening, unloaded our stuff in the condo and went straight to dinner at Fishcamp in Port Royal.  We had about an hour wait and entertained ourselves checking out the old fishing boats, people watching and hooking the ring on the string!  The food was pretty good, the atmosphere 100% perfect and sitting out on the deck was just what we needed to kickoff our beach week!

Sunday we had our first reservation at the pool.  They have three pools at this complex, but because of COVID only one of them was open and they had a reservation system set up that only allowed two families at the pool at a time(and had to stay on our own side) and only four times per day.  So, that is 8 families a day got to use the pool and this was a HUGE complex.  So so ridiculous!!!  But, the lady who we rented our condo from knew that we'd prefer to get to the pool, so she stayed on the computer every day to ensure that she was the first to sign us up so that we got a spot every day that we were there!  She was THE BEST!!!!  After the pool we went back to the condo for lunch and then spent the rest of the day at the beach only leaving to come back for a quick dinner at the condo!

He was still struggling with swimmers' ear for
the first part of the trip so he wasn't allowed to
get his head wet for the a couple of days!
Torture for a water-loving boy!

The pool had a great view of the marsh!

Ice cream - EVERY.DAY!

When the tide went out, it went WAY out!  But left this mucky
sand/mud!  It was pretty and we found tons of sand dollars and
hermit crabs, but it was pretty gross and you sunk way down
if you stayed in one place too long!  This was the only downside
of Harbor Island!

Hermit crabs

Monday we spent the morning at the pool, had lunch at the condo, got some beach time in and then went crabbing off a dock at the complex.  We caught one right away!  We had dinner at the condo again and then took a long walk along the beach as the sun set!

Tuesday we got an early start and headed to Hunting Island for the day!  First we made a stop to check the crab traps and minnow traps we'd left out for the night.  We had probably 100 minnows in there!  And, we saw an alligator swimming around just below us!  After the excitement of that, we went on to Hunting Island.  The island has been closed for the better part of the summer first because of COVID and then for the past three weeks due to flooding.  They opened it only yesterday so we knew there would be a big crowd there!  We arrived at 9:30am and got a reservation to go up in the lighthouse after lunch.  We played on the beach all morning and C was finally allowed to skim board, but had to wear a plug and a cap!  He didn't mind!  He was just so glad to get to play in the water!  We ate lunch on the beach and then went to climb the light house!  It was a beautiful view and the breeze was very refreshing as hot as it was outside!  We came down and the kids got ice creams before going out to the beach for a little more play time.  After we'd played ourselves house, we packed up the car and went back to the condo, showered and then went to dinner at Johnson Creek Tavern.  This place did not have the best food, just okay, but again the atmosphere as we sat out on the deck right next to the marsh and river was well worth it!  On our way back in we stopped to check on the crabs again and ran into our neighbors that we made friends with.  They had two little boys C's age and all the kids, and adults, had fun throughout the week together!

Minnows!

First time ever skim boarding!

All these kids got along so well!

Wednesday we made it back to the pool in the morning, lunch at the condo, beach in the afternoon and then we went to our favorite restaurant of the trip, Dockside, for dinner!

Thursday morning we had to set our alarms because we had a 9:20am carriage ride booked in Beaufort!  It was an overcast morning and a perfect day to spent in downtown Beaufort.  We loved the tour and were able to learn a bit about the city and then we walked the streets and let the kids pick out souvenirs and then grabbed lunch at Plum's(my least favorite place that we ate!).  We stayed until early afternoon and then went back and hit the beach.  C was able to boogie board today for the first time because of his swimmers' ear and he was like a pig in mud!!  It was rainy during the late afternoon and we got chased off the beach a couple of times.  We had dinner in the condo and then spent the evening on the beach!

Beaufort, SC

Had to wear masks the whole time on the
carriage ride!

The boys enjoyed checking out the old guns
at the art gallery.

The old armory that is now a history museum.
The chocolate shop that where Tom Hanks got his
box of chocolates for Forrest Gump.  Many of the scenes
from the movie were filmed in and around Beaufort!

Friday we slept in a lot!  I think the late nights and all day activity were starting to catch up with us!  We did the beach in the morning, pool, a late lunch at the condo, and then hit the beach for the rest of the day!  I picked up our dinner from Boondocks and brought it back to the condo so that we didn't have to miss any more beach time than absolutely necessary!  We stayed out playing, walking and enjoying our last day until the sun set and we finally had to go in!!

S and I both read two books while we were there!
